Today, our fourth-grade nonfiction authors shared informational writing with an audience of first graders. Ky shared about his love of the Atlanta Falcons, including his thoughts on the team trading receiver Julio Jones. Savannah shared about squirrel monkeys and dedicated her book to her fellow squirrel monkey fans. Luca shared about Federico Chiesa, his favorite soccer player, who plays for the Italian national team and Juventus at the club level. And after sharing about her love of baking, Laila engaged with her first-grade audience members by asking about their own writing projects, which involve sharing about an animal.
“Our fourth grade writers learned how nonfiction writers think, how they research topics, and how they convey ideas and information clearly,” said Kimberly Soscie, one of our fourth-grade teachers. “Through reading and writing nonfiction, students came to understand the kinds of texts nonfiction writers create and decisions nonfiction writers make about content, structure, language, and visuals. Writing informative texts begins with educating yourself and ends with educating others!”
