Friends Academy made a mark at the second round of the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair (LISEF). The highly esteemed competition was held on March 13, 2025 at Crest Hollow Country Club. For the second round of HS LISEF, about 20% of the projects presented in Round 1 qualified for Round 2, with 11th-grade student Jerry Wang being invited to present his research to area scientists. Jerry’s project,” Magnet-Optical Effects of Chiral Lattice Vibrations on 2-Dimensional Materials”, earned him the Honorable Mention Award in the Material Sciences Division.

Also entering HS LISEF was Daren Zhong with his research on “An Analysis of Chess Games Using Skill-group Specific n-gram Language Models” and the team of Eric Hang, Kimi Zhang and Jeremy Ross with their research on “Physiological Responses of Oysters to Anthropogenic Noise: Implications for Filtration and Survival.”
Representing the Middle School, Graham Davis and Matt Hudak presented their project on “Remediation capabilities of Pleurotus Ostreatus in uptaking toxins and harmful chemicals in soil.”

Eighth grade Science teacher Rebecca Glavan supported these amazing students as the FA Science Research Competition Coach. "I am very proud of their dedication and hard work on their research and experiments. We have already started meeting about next year’s competitions and look forward to seeing what amazing ideas our teams generate!" she said.
